IMM [Mar.26 - Apr.1]

IMM is a weekly blog meme hosted by The Story Siren, where you post all the books you received this week.

I was in a very Epic Fantasy mode this week so all the books I got are epic fantasy ones.

These two together are actually the first book of The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. I think it's going to be a great story. Can't wait to start them.

These are the second and third books of the Farseer Trlogy by Robin Hobb, which is just the beginning of The Realms of the Elderlings series (thank you Goodreads). I had ordered the first book with these two but it still hasn't arrived...Hopefully I will get it before I leave for Easter.

Guy Langman, Crime Scene Procrastinator by Josh Berk

Let me start by saying that I love CSI, I love the TV series and everything that has to do with forensics, so I had great expectations from this book.

When I started reading it I wasn't sure if this book was brilliant or a disaster. Unfortunately it was the latter. The main character is a teen age boy who thinks like his twelve and acts like his twelve too, he was really annoying. He was indifferent with everything, didn't want to do anything with his life and was just wasting his time. You know what happens when you read a book about someone like that? You waste your own time too. I was hoping that someone would die soon, as the blurb promised but since no one did until I was half way in, I just gave up. I honestly didn't like being inside Guy's head. Very disturbing.

One last note: I hope no one says MILF anymore, it took me back to 1999 and the first American Pie movie.

Tell Me Something Tuesday #4

This is a weekly meme hosted by Cambria @ CambriaHebert.com. Each week there is a different question to be answered.

This week's tell me something:

Who are your favorite sidekicks in a book? (you know the main character’s BFF)

My answer:

I missed last week's Tell Me Something Tuesday, and now I am very glad to see that I didn't miss this question. This is something I have to think through.

*Leaves to search all her book*
*After 20 minutes*

Ok, now I have my top 3 favorite sidekicks. Let the count-down begin...

No. 3
Nelly from Blood Warrior by H.D. Gordon

Nelly is Alexa's sister and she is a vampire but a weird compination of two races of vampires that is very rare. But that's not why I like her. She is the sweetest person in the book! Maybe in a lot of books too. She always knows when something is wrong with her sister and is always there for her, even when Alexa isn't treating her nice. She is great! I just hope she had a bigger role in the book, although I heard that she even has her own PoV in the next one, can't wait.

No. 2
Bethany & Skylar from Every Other Day by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Bethany and Skylar are both Kali's friends. Bethany is a stack up cheerleader and Skylar is the school's weirdo. So different from each other but both get very close to Kali and become very strong and lovable characters by the end of the book. Both girls were kick-butt and brave in their own way (Kali was the only one doing the actual kick-butt) and never let Kali down.

No. 1
Phin from Texas Gothic by Rosemary Clement-Moore

Finally my favorite sidekick of all time is Phin, Amy's sister. Both girls were pretty special but Phin was the one that caught my heart by the first time she appeared. She is this mad scientist that could cure cancer and  go after world domination at the same time. You never know what to expect, never know what would happen when she's around. She looses track of time, direction but still always supports her sister, in her own weird and special way. Got to love her.

If you ever see anyone carrying a backpack, you know that their life sucks. No matter how old they are. Probably definitely if they're over thirty.

And finally I won Steel from a giveaway hop, I am very excited about this book, cause I love time-traveling and pirates.

Straight to Hell (Lilith Straight, #1) by Michelle Scott

Straight to Hell was a great surpise.

When I first received this book for review I wasn't sure if it'd be my kind of thing, I don't usually read books about 30-something women, but let me tell you I am really glad I got it. This book was amazing and hilarious. I fell in love with Lilith who was just like a real life person. Struggling with her life and trying to stay in the right path. But let's start with what this book is about.

Lilith Straight used to have everything, a loving, rich husband, a huge house, an adorable daughter, and everything money could buy until the day she got divorced and her life started falling apart. Her 23 year-old sister moved in with her, her ex-husband's sister dropped her troubled daughter in her doorstep, her house caugh fire, money was hard to come by and on top of everything else, she died. Lilith then learned a secret about the women in her line, they were all succubus, seducing demons working for hell, who could work their way around anything. She tests her new power to get new clothes and a new washing machine, make her ex do what she wants and a lot more, but not everything is great. Her new boss is determined to have Lilith use her powers for evil and her new co-worker is one hell of a hot incubus.

As I said before this books was a great surprise. I adore Lilith, she fights so hard to not use her new powers for evil and to stay as good as she was before everything changed. She is a very believable person, she reacts the same way anyone would if they were in her shoes. All the characters in the book are so different and well developed that I could actually picture then perfect and expect their reactions, the author made a great work to help us understand them. The story it is a great balance of serious and hilarious moments, just like real life. Really well done. Finally, I am very curious as to what will happen next, I can't wait for the next one.

Blood Warrior (The Alexa Montgomery Saga #1) by H.D. Gordon

I am writing this for the second time cause it got erased by accident so forgive any rush mistakes.

Alexa is living her normal life not knowing who or what she really is, as normal as you can considered bearing bruises from training with your mother and running miles everyday just to go to school. One day her home is attacked by some vampire looking creatures and leaving their mother behind, she and her sister -Nelly- escaped to the woods. All with the help of her best and only friend Jackson. Alexa finds out that her sister is a kind of a vampire and Jackson a werewolve, while she herself is a Warrior, a race long lost. All three of them end up in a secret city full of vampires and werewolves and so their story begins.

I found the beginning of this book to be the best part of it. I really enjoyed Alexa, being all headstrong and powerfull, protecting her sister and actually having some weak moments. Still, I found that she became way to stubborn and couldn't see the obvious by the end of the book, she would also snap on her sister with no apparent reason. The one person that I truly loved was her sister, Nelly, she was so sweet, caring, always helping everyone and had her wise moments. From Alexa's two love interests I am team Jackson all the way. He was so funny, sweet and had green eyes, need I say more? I am not a bug fan of people that are "mend to be together" that's why I am not, and never will be, a big fan of Kayden -Alexa's other love interest. Unfortunately is pretty obvious who she will end up with. Also by the end of the book I felt that the story was a little bit all over the place but before it could bug me the book was over.

I am definitely reading the next one, as I am dying to know what will happen.

IMM [Mar.12 - Mar.18]

IMM is a weekly blog meme hosted by The Story Siren, where you post all the books you received this week.

Let's start with the e-book ARC I got for review:
Between is the Novella after Masquerade, the first book of the Heven and Hell series. I already read and reviewed this one. Really great. If you haven't read the series you have to check it out. There will also be a READ-ALONG for Masquerade in April if you want to enter.

Next are all the books I bought:
Yeap, I got the whole Darkest Powers Trilogy. And since I needed to get the whole package, cause I really wanted to read this series I also got the e-book with the novellas.
Hopefully I will start reading them soon.

I got Sisters Red in hardback and it's so pretty. I heard quite afew good things about this book, and the whle story seems intriguing.

And finally The Black Prism by Brent Weeks. I have one word for this book: HUGE. I got the hardback edition, which is taller than other hardbacks I have, but this one is really thick too, with 763 pages, which look more like a thousand to me.

This is what I got.

Between (Heven and Hell, #1.5) by Cambria Hebert

Between is the story of Logan, Sam's brother, while he starts turning into a hellhound and then his decision to leave home and find his brother.

Even if this was so tiny it was really good. I really enjoyed reading about Logan, cause we didn't know much about him from Masquerade and we finally saw Sam's family. And oh my, what a hideous family, his dad is a serial killer in the making (I watch way to many Criminal Minds lately). I would have run away too if I was Logan.

Anyways, it was really good, with a small "twist" in the end, which I was partially expecting reading Masquerade. Now I can't wait for the next book, Charade. I really missed Sam, his point of view is the best!

Cover Reveal: Between (A Heven and Hell Novella)

Between
by Cambria Hebert

I grew up in a comfortable house with two parents and a white-picket fence. My brother, Sam, and I used to play with sticks in the backyard and pretend they were swords. There were always cookies on the table and milk in the fridge. Then, one day, things changed.

Sam changed.

Life was never the same again. Sam left. My parents abandoned him when he needed them most, and I was left to survive in a house that was merely a shell of what it used to be. Mom cried all the time and Dad expected me to fill the void my brother left behind. But mostly, all we did was pretend. We pretended that things weren’t messed up. We pretended that Sam never existed.

Until I changed, too.

Now, everything’s a mess and I’m so confused. It’s like there are two different people trapped inside one body—my body—and one of them wants out. I do things. Bad things and I don’t know how to stop. I’m not sure I want to. The only way I can be normal again is if I find Sam. He’ll know what to do.

He has too.

I honestly can't wait for this one. Reading Masquerade I wondered what happened to Logan, Sam's brother,  and now it's time to find out. If you still haven't read Masquarade and want to go sign up in The Masquerade Read-Along

Chapters 1-8
  1. If you were disfigured like Heven (by some sort of accident) do you think you would have reacted the same way as her? (loss of self confidence, hiding yourself, etc)
  2. Do you think that Kimber’s plan for revenge against Cole (for kissing another girl) is a good idea?
  3. In the beginning chapters, Heven is very drawn to Sam but won’t admit it due to her own insecurities. Kimber begins to “date” Sam… do you think that Heven should have spoken up? Do think Kimber should have seen Heven’s real feelings?
  4. Masquerade is broken in four separate POV’s: Heven, Sam, The Hate and The Hope. Do you think having multiple POV’s adds depth to the story? Why or why not?
  5. A great source of strength for Heven is her grandmother. Who do you think yours is/would be?

I didn't even really know her, yet I would give my life for her. Not because I'm altruistic, but because it was who I was; who I had always been. I suppose that is what made me a true Warrior.
