Book Review: The Eye of the World (The Wheel of Time, #1) by Robert Jordan

The Eye of the World (The Wheel of Time, #1)
by Robert Jordan

After finishing the Riftwar Cycle by Raymond E. Feist (about 30 books) I was in desperate need of another Epic Fantasy series, that didn't have any complex politics and war tactics, just a couple of normal boys traveling the world, finding out they are ment for greatness and eventually saving everyone. Pretty simple, right? For me, this kind of plot is hard to come by to newer books, that's why I searched for a oldie but goodie. That's how I came across The Wheel of Time series.

This book is exactly what I was looking for. And the series has enough books to keep me occupied for a long time. This is the beginning of the epic journey of Rand, Perrin and Matt. All three of them are normal folks from the Two Rivers. One day their world gets turned upside down when a Trolloc army attacks their town. The enemy attack is led by a Fade, who seems especially interested in the three boys. Luckily for them Moiraine, an Aes Sedai - a woman who can use the One Power - is there to save them. After that, all together, along with Moiraine's warder, Thom the gleeman and Egwene the village's Wisdom in training, they embark on an epic journey to reach Tar Valon where all three boys can hide from the ones after them. Cause the Fade that is chasing them has a master, the Dark One, who everyone up until now thought he was safely sealed in his prison.

I know my summarize of the plot doesn't make much sense for anyone that hasn't already read the book. But let me say that, this is perfect for people getting introduced to epic fantasy. The world is beautifully build but is not confusing. Everything is introduced smoothly and I easily fell in love with the world, scenery and towns the characters visited. Also I really love the main party, and all the secondary characters, and I can't wait to see more of them hopefully in the next books.

So, all in all, I loved this. I can't wait to read more of the trios adventures. There are so many posibilities on what could happen in the future. I am currently waiting for the next book and I'll be starting it as soon as I have it in my hands.

Series: A Stolen Empire Series

Before she can become the greatest empress in history, fifteen-year-old Sophia will have to survive her social-climbing mother’s quest to put her on the throne of Russia—at any cost.

Imperial Court holds dangers like nothing Sophie has ever faced before. In the heart of St. Petersburg, surviving means navigating the political, romantic, and religious demands of the bitter Empress Elizabeth and her handsome, but sadistic nephew, Peter. Determined to save her impoverished family—and herself—Sophie vows to do whatever is necessary to thrive in her new surroundings. But an attempt on her life and an unexpected attraction threatens to derail her plans.

Alone in a new and dangerous world, learning who to trust and who to charm may mean the difference between becoming queen and being sent home in shame to marry her lecherous uncle. With traitors and murderers lurking around every corner, her very life hangs in the balance. Betrothed to one man but falling in love with another, Sophie will need to decide how much she’s willing to sacrifice in order to become the empress she is destined to be.

In a battle for the soul of a nation, will love or destiny reign supreme?

A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR:

The true story of Catherine the Great is one fraught with betrayal, intrigue, and romance. While a good deal of my story is drawn from actual people and events, I have been very liberal in the rearrangement of dates, events, and places. Whenever possible I took my cues from her own words, intermixing my own thoughts and ideas. My thought upon the creation of the book was simple. I looked at the woman she was when she claimed the crown and then wondered, how did an innocent girl from Germany become such a force of nature? Most people aren’t born cold or ambitious, but have circumstances that forge them into those people. And that was the story I wanted to tell in this book. I wanted to see the events in her early life that would have changed her into the person she became, and not knowing the truth of that story, I simply made something up. That is what we, as writers, do best.

If you are curious about the real history behind Catherine, I suggest heading to your local library and doing a bit of research. This is not meant to be a historically accurate representation, but a flight of fancy, one that I hope you, dear reader, will enjoy as much as I have.

Hello everyone! It's been a while since I did a book haul and I decided that from now on I will just one each month, on the last Sunday. I am going to skip the books I got during the summer, 'cause there are a lot of them. If you follow me on instagram you know what I am talking about. In this SS I am just going to showcase the books I accumulated in September (hopefully there won't be more 'cause I just placed a huge order for October and I am waiting on a lot of pre-orders).

A few words:
I won the audiobook for Impostor. I love this book and I really want to listen to the audiobook too, to see what it's like. I am currently reading Get Even and it's amazing. I am a huge Gretchen McNeil fan and this one doesn't disappoint. I listened to Veronica Mars at the beginning of the month, it was my first ever audiobook, and Kristen Bell rocked. Needless to say I am now a member of audible! I would also like to thank J.L. Bryan for my copy of Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper. I was part of the blitz and he kindly provided a copy to everyone. This is a book I am really looking forward to. Finally, 7 Out-Of-This-World Teen Novels is on sale for only $.99. It includes many Entangled Teen novels I am looking forward to: The Marked Son by Shea Berkley, Inbetween by Tara Fuller, Greta and the Goblin King by Chloe Jacobs, Conjure by Lea Nolan, Luminosity by Stephanie Thomas. Chosen Ones by Tiffany Truitt. Prophecy Girl by Cecily White. I just had to get it. Here is the Amazon link: Seven Out-of-this-World Teen Novels (Entangled Teen) in case you want to grab it too.

Ellie Jordan, Ghost Trapper by J.L. Bryan
Publication date: September 19th 2014
Genres: Adult, Horror, Paranormal

Ellie Jordan’s job is to catch and remove unwanted ghosts. Part detective, part paranormal exterminator, Ellie operates out of Savannah, Georgia, one of the oldest and most haunted cities in North America.

When a family contacts her to deal with a disturbance presence in the old mansion they’ve recently purchased, Ellie first believes it to be a typical, by-the-book specter, a residual haunting by a restless spirit. Instead, she finds herself confronted an evil older and more powerful than she’d ever expected, rooted in the house’s long and sordid history of luxury, sin, and murder. The dangerous entity seems particularly interested in her clients’ ten-year-old daughter.

Soon her own life is in danger, and Ellie must find a way to exorcise the darkness of the house before it can kill her, her clients, or their frightened young child.

He’s from another planet, and if Jess can’t help him get back to his ship, he’ll be stuck on Earth with nothing to look forward to but the pointy end of a dissection scalpel.

Hiding him in her room probably isn’t the best idea. Especially since her Dad is in charge of the squadron searching for David. That doesn’t mean she won’t do it. It just means she can’t get caught.
Helping David get home while protecting her heart—that’s gonna be the hard part. After all, she can’t really fall for a guy who’s not exactly from here.
As they race through the woods with Major Dad and most of the U.S. military one breath behind them, Jess and David grow closer than either of them anticipated. But all is not what it seems. David has a genocide-sized secret, and one betrayal later, they are both in handcuffs as alien warships are positioning themselves around the globe. Time is ticking down to Armageddon, and Jess must think fast if she’s to save the boy she cares about without sacrificing Earth—and everyone on it.

22465896Series: The Forbidden Doors #1
Release date: September 8th 2014
Purchase: Amazon

Synopsis via Goodreads:

Fifteen-year-old Piper Crenshaw knows her house is strange. It’s never needed repairs since it was built in the 1800s, and the lights flicker in response to things she says. As if those things aren’t creepy enough, it’s also the place where her mother committed murder.

To prove she’s not afraid of where she lives, Piper opens a forbidden door, which hides a staircase that leads to the ceiling. That’s when the flashbacks of the original residents from 1875 start, including a love affair between two young servants. Each vision pulls Piper deeper into not only their story, but also her house. Piper confides in her best friend, Todd, whom she's gradually falling for, but even he doesn't believe her. At least, not until her house gets axed during a prank, and the act injures Piper instead, cutting a gash the size of Texas into her stomach.

Piper realizes her house isn’t haunted—it’s alive. To sever her link to it, she must unravel the clues in the flashbacks and uncover the truth about her mother’s crime, before she becomes part of her house for good.

I HEART ROBOT Cover Art from Suzanne van Rooyen
I'm not the most artistically inclined. While I do love art and have been known to bust out the pencils and paints myself, it's not an area where I'd consider myself particularly talented. In short, I knew that cover design was something best left to the professional and I had every confidence in Month9Books.
I am so grateful to Georgia McBride for allowing me to have the amount of input I did when it came to cover creation for I Heart Robot. This is a novel that is as much about a civil rights struggle in a futuristic, post-war city as it is about romance, and we wanted a cover that reflected both elements. Finding the right balance between romance and science fiction was a tall order, but Month9Books delivered in spades by presenting me with two stylistically different covers. I loved elements of both, and by working closely with the cover artist and with Georgia we managed to combine all the best parts of both original covers into what we have today: a cover that reflects the gritty world my characters live in while emphasizing the fact that this is above all, a love story.
I Heart Robot
Sixteen-year-old Tyri wants to be a musician and wants to be with someone who won't belittle her musical aspirations.
Q-I-99 aka 'Quinn' lives in a scrap metal sanctuary with other rogue droids. While some use violence to make their voices heard, demanding equal rights for AI enhanced robots, Quinn just wants a moment on stage with his violin to show the humans that androids like him have more to offer than their processing power.
Tyri and Quinn's worlds collide when they're accepted by the Baldur Junior Philharmonic Orchestra. As the rift between robots and humans deepens, Tyri and Quinn's love of music brings them closer together, making Tyri question where her loyalties lie and Quinn question his place in the world. With the city on the brink of civil war, Tyri and Quinn make a shocking discovery that turns their world inside out. Will their passion for music be enough to hold them together while everything else crumbles down around them, or will the truth of who they are tear them apart?
