Arrived This Week [Oct.3-Oct.9]

Last Monday a hige package from amazon arrived, I was really excited to receive it. What did it had inside?
Well these books:

I couldn't help myself, so I bought them all together.
The package had one more book that I'm curious about.
I've heard a lot of good things about it. The plot is weird. Never heard of anything like it. So, I think I should give it a chance!

A Game of Thrones (A Song of Ice and Fire, #1) by George R.R. Martin

There might be possible spoilers in the review.

I can't believe I'm finally finished with this book. It took more than 2 weeks. Now, now, don't get me wrong the book is great. I loved almost everything about it, except maybe the too much describing that went on, but it's usual for epic fantasy books. I guess.

One thing before I start with the book, if you had watched the series, like I did, it gets boring reading the book, almost evertything is the same. And in the series you get to see all these amazing actors you can't help but imagine the characters in the book like them.

The book now, well, the one thing that the series got wrong is the age of the Stark kids, in the books they are younger, but I also think that in the book more time passes by, closer to a year, maybe more, which I didn't get from the series.

The story begins with the Night Watch and what I thought would be the most important thing in the book, (not the night watch but the Others), turns out I was wrong. There are so many things going on. The Hand of King Robert dies and Eddard Start is called to take his place. He goes with a heavy heart, cause he doesn't want to leave half his family and his home back in Winterfell. When he arrive he realizes that maybe the previous Hand didn't have a natural death. He starts following in his footsteps, learning what he did before he died and finding out a (not so) socking truth. In the meantime, we also learn the story of Daenerys, she and her brother are the last of the Targaryen House. They are the last dragons, or blood of the dragons at least. She gets married in hopes to return home to the Seven Kingdoms and claim her familys throne from King Robert.

There are a lot of twists and turns, but I saw them coming, cause I had watched the series. If I hadn't I'm sure there's no way I could predict some things. Like the ending for example, both for the Starks and Daenerys.

Another think I didn't quite like about the book is that I get the feeling the author is a little bit cruel. Ok, it's war and a lot of people die, but he killed characters that weren't even fighting. I love all the characters and I came to care about them, I can't see them die in the first book! Also I wanted to know the story from Robb's point of view, since I believe he's one of the characters that had to change the most, but no... no Robb for me, not even in the next book! At least there's Arya point of view, she's my second fav.

All in all the book was great, huge...but great! And I'm looking forward for the next one.

P.S. My favourite part of the book are the direwolves. They are adorable!

Characters and Viewpoint by Orson Scott Card

The blurb (from Goodreads):
This guide provides practical, in-depth instruction on how fiction writers can make the best choices in creating characters and handling viewpoint. Writers will learn how to put original, yet realistic people in their stories, while choosing the viewpoint that best suits the characters and the storyline.

My Thoughts:

Solid, strong and believable characters are the essence of a good book! This book is the perfect guide on how to built this kind of characters. From the very simple things, like their personality and looks to the more complex ones, like the reasons behind their acts, this book explains them all. It is well writen and easy to understand. It can help you create and develop the characters of your story, and why not, maybe your whole story.

I never thought that characters are the most important thing in a story, but I realized as much by reading this book. Even if the storyline is not that strong, extraordinary characters can make even the simpliest of ideas blossom into something beautiful.

The only thing you have to do is make them as real as they can be. Have reasons and motives, hopes and fears, a past and dreams for the future. Give them life. This is a book that helps you with that.

It is the only book I've read about writing and I think that it's given me everything I needed!

While Reading #1

I haven't posted in a while cause I had been a bit busy. I thought, since I am still reading A Game of Thrones, and don't have a new review, I should make this meme or whatever for the time between the reading.

Among them, What I Am About To Read.

Has any of you read them? Any thoughts?

Also there was A New Release a few days ago.

Jack the Ripper strikes back at modern-day London!
That must be a good one.
It is a must read in my to read list.

But for now I still have to finish the one I'm reading and fast so I can post a review and move on with my reading.

That was all. I just felt like it was time for a quick post.
Have a nice day!

October Plans and September Memories

The month has changed and Fall is finally starting to show. No more T-shirts, I got bored of them!
So, first I'll talk about things regarding the Month of September. As you can see, I changed the "Book of the (last) Month" to Hex Hall, it was by far the best I read in September and I have the next on waiting for me.

Me: "Wait for me Demonglass, I only have like a million books to read before I start with you"
Demonglass: ...

You didn't expect it to answer, did you?

Anyways, moving on to the best movie I watched in September, this one has to be Pirates of Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

The movie was fun, with a lot of adventure, battles and mermaids! Johny Depp was Hilarious as ever. I love the character of Jack Sparrow. I also liked the fact that the story wasn't strongly connected with the last three movies. I was beggining to getting tired of Will and Elizabeth. Now this one is pure-Captain Sparrow-crazy and I love it.

Now, song of September. Hmmm, that's a hard one, but I think I got it. After watching Fast Five, you know Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, hot guys, great cars and the most exciting robbery of all time, I fell in love with one song. And here it is.

Danza Kuduro

Moving on with the Month of October and my plans for it.

Books:
I'm struggling to finish A Game of Thrones and I'm almost done! It took me quite some time. So after I'm done with it my to-read list includes:

Not necessarily in this order. I just hope I'll make it through all of them, although I'm not so sure, they're many and I have uni... Hate studying!

Movies:
Certainly I'll watch whaterver comes to mind but the ones that I must watch are:

  • Drive Angry
  • Source Code (Jake is always so cute!)

If you have any more suggestions or questions feel free to comment.

Paranormalcy(Paranormalcy #1) by Kiersten White

The Blurb(from Goodreads):
Evie's always thought of herself as normal. Sure her best friend is a mermaid, her ex-boyfriend is a faerie, she's falling for a shapeshifter and she's the only person who can see through paranormals' glamours, but still. Normal.
Only now paranormals are dying and Evie's dreams are filled with haunting voices and mysterious prophecies. She begins to suspect there is a link between her abilities and the sudden rash of deaths, and even worse, that she is at the center of a dark prophecy promising destruction to all paranormal creatures.

My Thoughts:
Ok, so where to begin with this book?

Well, Evie, our heroine, was very funny and I loved how she described everything. I am a huge fan of tv series and lockers myself and enjoy spending time inside her head. She had just the right mix of bravery, humour and irony. And all the way she was concerned with doing the right thing. I love a character that believes in something and sticks to that.

Now about the plot, the story was nice, well build, there where a lot of hints about everything so no major surprise, but I enjoyed it very much. But sometimes it felt like Evie didn't had the chance to anything to move the plot forward, she was just drag around by everything that happened.

I also loved the titles of each chapter. That was one great touch! :)
